Open Kincardine piers and let people make their own decisions, says reader

September 4, 2023

To the Editor:
RE: "Piers at Kincardine Harbour remain closed"

I am not sure how long ago the north and south piers, at Kincardine Harbour, were built, but well over 100 years.

To close the piers in 2023 is kind of ridiculous, in my opinion. There is life-saving equipment now on the piers.

There are two very simple things that could be done: post a very clear sign indicating, “Use at your own risk;” and install new ladders leading out of the water because the current ones are degraded.

The piers are Kincardine’s bread and butter, enjoyed by so many visitors as well as locals. Drownings are absolutely unfortunate, and usually a result of people not realizing their own swimming ability. There have been multiple drownings of people swimming off the beach. Is the next step to close the beach?

The piers are very wide. Is the town now saying it is unsafe to stroll down the pier, with no intention of swimming?

In my opinion, this is a knee-jerk reaction by our council, making choices for people instead of letting people make choices for themselves.

The piers, themselves, are safe. New ladders are a must, but they would be a drop in the bucket.

Open up the piers and start letting people make decisions for themselves.
