September 14, 2024

Last weekend was the Blyth Threshers Reunion which several in our area make plans to attend to see friends and support the many exhibitors of antique machinery, artists, and musicians.

Also, the Paisley, Chesley, Dundalk, Arthur, Mildmay and Arran-Tara Fall Fairs were just a few of the fairs held on the first full weekend of September in Ontario. Hope you were able to join and support those communities as well! Each certainly has its own unique events and exhibitions.

September birthday greetings to Janice Needham, Caitlin Harris, Ken Harris, Grady Little, Carole Robertson, Bob Taylor, and to Cole Van Dyke who is now three years old!

Lots of wedding anniversaries, too, and we celebrate with Christine and Jim Roberts, Christine and Mike Gemmell, Brian and Shirley Dewar, Andrew and Diane MacDonald, Jim and Bern Scott, Sharon and Alec Martin and Jim and Fran Farrell.

Heather and Sam Finnie and Jim and Fran Farrell took a trip up to Burk's Falls to see Bruce and Deb Aitken last Thursday. It was a lovely trip there and back, and the trees are still holding their green!

If you are into astronomy, Sept. 18 is a Supermoon with a partial Lunar Eclipse; it's also called the Corn Moon, Potato Moon and Harvest Moon.

Also, many of our songbirds start their migration from breeding grounds to Central and South America. Through September and into October, turning extra lights out helps the birds find their migration routes without the distraction of light pollution as most birds migrate at night and use stars and moon to navigate.

And if you like swimming, it looks as if we're going to get a nice stretch of weather to warm up the water again – yippee!

Bren and Harvey de Leeuw enjoyed an early September tour through northern Michigan, stopping along the way to visit the lovely town of Charlevoix on the west side. There, you can find some rather interesting architecture by Earl Young - homes referred to as Mushroom Houses! They are quite whimsical, like something from a fairy tale with very unique roof designs! Bren and Harvey spent a day exploring Mackinac Island before heading to Sault Ste. Marie where they boarded a train to Agawa Canyon in hopes of catching some fall colours. The train ride took them past countless beautiful lakes and forests, ending in an area with three waterfalls. This was an area where some of the Group of Seven painters passed time capturing the scenery on their canvasses.

Celebrating his 8th birthday earlier this month, was Arlo Farrell (son of Becca and Thomas). And Happy Birthday to twins, Blake and Winston Bridge (sons of Sandy and Sasha of Kincardine), who celebrated their first birthday this past week! Festivities had all the uncles and aunts, cousins, the Kovalenko Family, Oma and Opa, and Grandma Bev joining in to celebrate all three birthdays at the home of the Farrells!

Congratulations to Vova and Katya Kovalenko and family on their second anniversary in Canada!

PURPLE GROVE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Members and friends of the Purple Grove Women’s Institute met Sept. 4 at the Blyth Festival Theatre for the afternoon performance of “Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: The Farmerettes!” This is an excellent portrayal of a time of our history that we know little about. The play is based on the book by Bonnie Sitter and documents the contributions of young women who joined the Ontario Farm Service Force during the war years.

After the show, the group adjourned to the Blyth Inn for supper and catching up with friends and members from the summer. Business was deferred to an E-mail. Fran Farrell thanked Dianne Simpson and Christine Roberts for organizing the day. See you at the fair in the Social Room for coffee, tea, water, cookies and muffins! Donations of labelled muffins and cookies will be gratefully accepted - no nuts, please!

Members have received their program books and thanks to Marilyn Reid and Sharon Martin for putting those together.

The next meeting will be Oct. 9 at 1:30 p.m., at the Purple Grove Community Centre. James Turland of the Huron Fringe Field Naturalists, will be the guest speaker. There is a great deal we can learn from our feathered friends – and one area of interest is what they can tell us relating to climate change. If you would like to participate, or know more about the Women’s Institute, contact secretary Fran Farrell at farhope@hurontel.on.ca.
