ROBERT (BOB) REID COURTNEY

November 23, 2018

Robert (Bob) Reid Courtney of Point Clark, beloved husband of Joyce (Campbell) Courtney, died at Pinecrest Manor, Lucknow, Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, at the age of 91. Born in Kincardine, Feb. 13, 1927, he was the son of the late Lottie (Reid) and Archibald Courtney. Loving father of Dennis Courtney of Point Clark, Wendy (Tom) Leonard of Campbellville, Michael (Debbie) Courtney of Huron Township, and Shannon (Bill) Henderson of Point Clark. Greatly missed by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by his sister, Geraldine McLeod of Kincardine; sisters-in-law, Janet Kempton of Point Clark, and Joan (Ellwood) Irwin of Guelph; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his son, Patrick; brother, Leonard (Muriel) Courtney; and brothers-in-law, Bill Kempton and Carmen McLeod. Bob was a local historian who enjoyed gathering information about his community of Point Clark, especially the lighthouse, and sharing it with others. One of his most popular tales about the Point Clark Lighthouse centred on the MacDonald boys, the mischievous sons of a 19th Century lighthouse keeper. They allegedly sent a cat sailing off the top of the 26-metre-high tower one day in a makeshift parachute fashioned out of an umbrella and an old fruit basket. "The cat, apparently, survived," said Bob, with a grin. A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at the Pine River United Church, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, at 11 a.m., with visitation two hours prior. Interment, Pine River United Church Cemetery, Lurgan. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pine River United Church or the Diabetes Association, are greatly appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
