Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper is touting a child benefit payout that, in reality, is actually an unfair system that gives money to those who need it least, says Allan Thompson, federal Liberal candidate for Huron-Bruce.
He says only federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau is offering new leadership and a new plan that will benefit the people of Huron-Bruce.
“Harper’s Conservatives are touting the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) payout – which residents of Huron-Bruce helped pay for – that unfairly benefits the wealthiest few,” says Thompson. “Harper's economic plan has failed the middle-class residents of this community; they continue to work longer and harder just to make ends meet.
“After a decade of Harper, only Trudeau is offering new leadership and a plan for real change.”
A Liberal government would replace the UCCB with the new Canada Child Benefit: one bigger, automatic, tax-free monthly cheque that gives up to $533 per month per child directly to Canadian families, says Thompson. With the Liberal plan, nine out of 10 families would receive more in monthly child benefit payments than under Harper’s system. The Liberal plan would give families more money to help with the high costs of raising their kids, and would also provide more help to lower-income Canadians.
“Trudeau is the only leader who’s truly focused on struggling middle-class Canadians," Thompson says. "A Liberal government would give a tax cut to the middle class and provide middle-class families with more support. Our plan for real change will create much-needed economic growth in regions all across Canada, and put more money in the pockets of those who need it most, including right here in our riding of Huron-Bruce.”
