Huron-Bruce MPP reflects on highs and lows of 2014

Huron-Bruce MPP reflects on highs and lows of 2014

The end of the year is a great opportunity to reflect on the highs and lows of 2014 and to look ahead at the exciting changes and opportunities to come in 2015.

Looking back at 2014, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says a highlight was being re-elected for her second term in this riding.

“I am so proud of the way we ran our campaign," she says. "I am humbled by the overwhelming support I received at the doors and on the ballot from thousands of Huron-Bruce citizens.”

At Queen’s Park, Thompson started the year uncovering the details of the $1.1-billion Liberal government gas plant scandal in Estimates Committee. The scandal continued, when premier Kathleen Wynne admitted earlier in December that the OPP was granted a second search warrant into her office for the investigation.

“As the Auditor General noted in her annual report last month, Ontario’s debt is projected to be $325-billion by 2018," says Thompson. "That is $23,000 of debt for every man, woman and child in this province. It is unacceptable — Ontario simply cannot afford anymore reckless spending or scandals. I am committed to continue to hold this Liberal government to account.”

As the Official Opposition Critic for Environment and Climate Change, Thompson predicts that 2015 will be the year of yet another tax introduced by the Liberal government.

“All signs point toward the implementation of a carbon tax or cap-and-trade system in Ontario in the New Year," she says. "The Liberals desperately need the money to fund their ongoing list of scandals and disastrous policies, such as the billion-dollar failed Green Energy Act.”

The Green Energy Act has cost taxpayers billions of dollars for expensive, unnecessary wind and solar power — that Ontario ends up selling at a loss other to other jurisdictions, she adds.

“I look forward to the spring, where our party will elect a new leader and have a fresh start. We need a leader who will listen and give Ontarians a true alternative in 2018 to this scandal-plagued Liberal government.”

Earlier in December, Thompson announced her support for Christine Elliott, MPP from Whitby-Oshawa, as leader of the provincial Conservatives.

“I’m looking forward to the new beginnings and challenges ahead," says Thompson. "We have a lot happening in Huron-Bruce, within our party and across Ontario. I resolve to follow up on local issues, such as the impacts of the Ontario Tire Stewardship Program; ensuring responsible planning, industry collaboration and ultimately a resolution for Neonicotinoid use across the province; as well as continuing to press the Liberals on affordable energy. There is much more in store for 2015 and I'm enthusiastic for what lies ahead."

Happy New Year!
