West Region OPP detachments celebrate Police Week
(WEST REGION, ON) - The OPP is joining police services throughout Ontario and across Canada to promote Police Week which honours and celebrates the work of front-line police officers, 9-1-1 communicators, and civilian staff members.

This year's Police Week theme is "Working Together to Keep our Communities Safe," and the campaign runs from May 9-15, 2021.

"Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with the Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally May 15,” says inspector Glenn Miller, Essex County OPP detachment commander. “This year, we honour our police officers and personnel for the extraordinary work they do every day in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic."

Throughout this week, detachments across West Region will be highlighting the many ways in which our members continue to serve and engage with our communities. Our members continue to work alongside our allied first-responders and health-care professional partners to protect members of the public. Our social media accounts are used regularly to share information and provide education to ensure public safety.

Although traditional public engagement will not occur during this year's campaign, OPP members are inviting the public to connect on social media to show their support.

Police Week in Ontario is sponsored by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. It is part of National Police Week, led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
