Founding member of Kincardine Barbarians Rugby Club dies at the age of 85

Douglas David Dyer died at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre - Kincardine, Friday, July 24, 2015, in his 86th year.

Beloved husband of the late Yvonne Dyer (née Griffiths). Survived by his sons, Mark (Linda) and Alun (Cheryl). Cherished grandfather of Evan (Alannah Wilson), Jacqueline (J.R.) Beaudrie, Anna (Richard) Blythe.

Predeceased by his parents, Evan and Ethel (Lewis) Dyer; his wife, Yvonne Dyer; his brother, Mervyn Dyer; and sister-in-law, Mercia Dyer.

Doug was born in Brynna, South Wales. His career began in the Merchant Navy after which he spent his working years in the chemical industry employed by British Petroleum in Wales and Montreal and overseas in Algeria and Iran.

He emigrated to Canada in 1974 when he took a position with the oil refinery in Come-by-Chance, Newfoundland. In 1976 he moved his family to Kincardine when he took a position with Ontario Hydro. He was a sift supervisor at the Bruce Heavy Water Plant until his retirement in 1989.

Doug was an expert marksman in .22-calibre shooting (as were Yvonne, Mark and Alun) and represented Wales at the 1966 Empire and Commonwealth Games. During his life, he was an avid rugby and hockey fan and has been a huge supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also the founding member and president of the Kincardine Barbarians Rugby Club.

Visitation will be held at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine, Tuesday, July 28, from Noon until the time of the funeral at 1 p.m., with Pastor Kenneth Craig officiating.

Interment, Kincardine Cemetery.
