Fierce wind storm, followed by severe thunderstorm wreaks havoc on Kincardine area

A fierce wind storm ripped through the Kincardine area Sunday afternoon (Aug. 2), toppling trees and hydro poles and wreaking havoc on the Ripley Reunion celebration.

 

A section of Highway 9, just west of Bruce County Road 7 (Ripley Road), was closed as the eastbound lane was littered with hydro poles that were snapped off in the high wind.

 

The Southline was also closed, between Highway 21 and the Ripley Road, as the fierce wind tore out a number of trees which then took out a hydro line.

 

Trees were felled in many locations, including along Lake Range Drive between the 8th and 10th Concessions.

 

Meanwhile, at the Ripley Reunion, the storm blew threw, taking down a section of fencing and a corner of one of the tents in the beer gardens. The crowd was ushered into the arena and remained there until the heavy rain and wind diminished.

 

The storm blew in quickly around 3 p.m., and lasted about a half-hour.

 

A severe thunderstorm then hit around 7:30 p.m., bringing another dose of high wind, heavy rain, thunder, lightning and hail.

 

While most people in the Town of Kincardine retained power, there were some outages in the rural communities, and the storm knocked out Internet service for the majority of the area. Power was not restored until Monday afternoon.

 

Ripley Reunion organizers were forced to cancel the Shirt Tail Dance because of the weather.
