Harvest time in the 1940s
From the diary of W.J. Ritchie, Maple Lodge Farm, 125 acres, Sideroad 18, Glenelg Township, Grey County

July, 1941

Monday, 21st - Hot. We cut fall wheat in west front field. Took in some hay (meanwhile finishing haying).
Sunday, 27th - None of us at church. Very hot. 96 in shade.
Monday, 28th - We cut barley in second west field. D. McQueen here.
Tuesday, 29th - We were cutting oats in front east field.
Wednesday, 30th - Went for beef. Raining. Choring around and fixed fence south side of third field.
Thursday, 31st - I finished cutting front field east. D. McQueen here in PM and we cut oats west end of second west field.

August, 1941

Friday, 1st - We hauled in fall wheat - eight loads and finished stooking front field east [note in margin - DM 3 1/2 days].
Saturday, 2nd - Hector (neighbour) called and took me to council meeting.
Sunday, 3rd - Edith, Dorothy (sister-in-law and daughter) and I at church. Warm.
Monday, 4th - Cutting new ground and then in back field.
Tuesday, 5th - Finished cutting all except one acre at noon [71 pounds twine].
Wednesday, 6th - Over at Clarence’s (son-in-law) threshing with team. Fine and clear. Bessie (wife), Dorothy and Edith over.
Thursday, 7th - Finished Clarence’s threshing and moved here. Alix (sister-in-law) and Dorothy at threshing.   [8 
Friday, 8th -Threshing, fine and bright. Through at 6 o’clock. 10 hours.                                                                                   8
