“I hear it again and again on doorsteps in Huron-Bruce – after a decade of (prime minister) Stephen Harper, people are working longer and harder just to make ends meet,” says Thompson. “Middle-class families in Huron-Bruce need real change. They need money in their pockets to save, invest and grow the economy, both locally and on a national scale. Liberals have a plan to make a real difference for the people of our community.”
He says a Liberal government would give a tax cut to the middle class. Canadians with annual taxable incomes between $44,700 and $89,401 would see their income tax rate fall to 20.5 per cent. “We will ask the wealthiest one per cent to pay a little more, so the middle class can pay less,” says Thompson.
A Liberal government would also create the Canada Child Benefit: one bigger, fair, tax-free, automatic monthly child benefit that puts more money back in the pockets of Canadian families who need it most, says Thompson. “In fact, our Canada Child Benefit will lift 315,000 children out of poverty. Nine out 10 families will get more from the Liberal plan than under Harper's unfair system.
“Families in our community and across Canada are struggling. Harper's latest plan gives billions in benefits to the wealthiest few, failing to do anything for middle-class Canadians and all those working hard to join them. The NDP (New Democratic Party) is not offering any answers on the economy, and instead, supports Harper's failed plan. Trudeau and the Liberal team have a real plan to grow the middle class and ensure everyone in Huron-Bruce has a real chance to succeed.”
