Adrienne Mason, project co-ordinator for the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN), welcomed 18 members of the Ripley and District Horticultural Society's youth club, “For Our Youth,” to the McLarty Education Shed, on Sideroad 20 just south of the 6th Concession, Saturday, for an opportunity to explore nature.
Mason demonstrated how everything in nature is connected by making a "web of life" with the children. She asked questions, and if answered correctly, the youngsters got to hold onto a rope and pictures of different creatures, creating the web of life.
Next, was a walk to the top of the hill with a view of the pond, where Mason had the children fill buckets of water. They let the buckets loose on top of the hill, and the water ran in a straight line or meandered down into the pond, demonstrating erosion and how to prevent it.
After all this nature fun, the most exciting event was still to come, with the youngsters trying to catch frogs and other creatures in the pond. Armed with nets, bowls and magnifying glasses the adventure began.
All creatures, great and small, were gently returned to their habitat at the close of the exciting adventures at the PRWIN site.
