Kincardine Agricultural Society ready to host best fair yet in two weeks' time
The Kincardine Agricultural Society and its many volunteers are getting ready to host the best fair yet, in just two weeks' time.
With the theme, "Blue Jeans and Country Dreams," the fair runs three days, Sept. 4-6, at the Connaught Park pavilion and fairgrounds.
Friday night begins with the opening of the main pavilion for viewing of the hall exhibits, followed by the highlight of the evening, the ambassador competition. This contest returned to the fair last year with the crowning of the 2014 ambassador Sadie Shewfelt.
This year, there are four girls vying for the title: Hailey Allen, Christine Benney, Lara Clubb and Kelsey Padfield.
The girls had their first orientation and information session Saturday, Aug. 8, with co-organizer Margaret Visser, Shewfelt, and ambassador pageant MC Dylan Trahan.
Visser and Shewfelt discussed the various aspects of the pageant, including the fashion show and speeches, while Trahan focused on tips for speech-writing, presentation and using a microphone.
The pageant will feature the official opening of the fair by Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie, and entertainment by Irelyn Nixon (Irish dancing), Owen Nixon (fiddle), and Annie Colquhoun (Scottish dancing).
Saturday features exhibits in the hall; beef, dairy and horse shows, the infamous cake wheel, children's games with prizes; the fall fair parade at 11:30 a.m.; and music by young musicians from Pick Studio from noon to 4 p.m.
New this year, is the Saturday night dance, with Steve Deer and Friends, from 7-10 p.m., and DJ Ryan Berry from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Also new this year, the events continue Sunday, with a community worship service at 10:30 a.m.; display of new cars and RVs by Lakeside GMC, Montgomery Ford, and Pierson's; miniature horse show; remote-control cars, trucks and helicopters event; and Cloudbusters model airplane-flying demonstration.

During a presentation to Kincardine council, at its meeting in Underwood Aug. 5, Visser and Lindsay Dykeman promoted the fair and the new events.
They thanked council for the $1,000 community grant.
"This support helps us work to make the fair bigger and better every year," said Visser. "This is our first year with the return of the Saturday night dance. Get your tickets; they're $10 each, to hear Steve Deer and Friends, and DJ Ryan Berry. The fair has also expanded in to Sunday with additional events. Please come out and support your fair."
Another first for the Kincardine Agricultural Society is having an ambassador attend the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Shewfelt joins Tiverton Fall Fair ambasador Kerri Rice and Ripley Fall Fair ambassador Meghan Johnson at the event, Aug. 21-23.
