Seniors Matter(s): Obituary of the late Mrs. "Common Sense!"
Thanks to Lori Borgman – www.loriborgman.com/ - my lament goes like this.

Obituary of the late Mrs. “Common Sense”

Today, I mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, “Common Sense,” who has been with me for many years. No one knows for sure how old she was, since her birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. I remember her as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and Maybe it was my fault.

“Common Sense” lived in every neighbourhood and most households. She helped us with simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge), share, wait your turn, and so forth.

Unfortunately, her health began to deteriorate rapidly near the turn of the century.

“Common Sense” lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they, themselves, had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. She declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

“Common Sense” lost her will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

“Common Sense” finally gave up her will to live, after a person failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. The person spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

I love the help we now need as in, “Do NOT swallow the contents of this gasoline can,” etc., etc., etc.

Mrs. Common Sense was struggling near her end with mortgage fiascos, credit card over-spending, governments printing new money, well-intentioned but overbearing regulations, people becoming experts on everything via Fox News, CNN etc., and finally COVID-19.

Opinions such as: I don’t need to wear a mask, wash your hands, don’t wash your hands, (airborne, not contact) wear masks, no need for masks outside, can’t leave your house during lock-down in rural Ontario, wear masks inside restaurants except when you are sitting, eating, talking, drinking and possibly coughing and so forth.

Meet John and Fred. They walk into a bar. John has been double-vaccinated and attended numerous highly-packed social events. Fred has worked from home and has NOT been vaccinated or outside his bubble. The question is, “Which person is more likely to transmit COVID-19? I don’t know, do you?

Many people feel it is Fred, but logic fails because John gets to drag his social life with him into the pub while Fred gets to go back home. I, personally, don’t know the answer. I do believe that my common sense asks you to wear a mask to keep your nasties (flu, etc.) contained, but just like coughing into your elbow, does that really stop the spread?

Clearly, unvaccinated people are more susceptible to continue the hospital costs of fighting this deadly invasion, yet Ontario premier Doug Ford, Nov. 3, 2021, stated that certificate proof of vaccination may no longer be needed after March, 2022. What?

“Common Sense” was preceded in death by her parents, “Truth” and “Trust;” her husband, “Discretion;” her daughter, “Responsibility;” and her son, “Reason.”

She is, however, survived by her three grandchildren: “I Know My Rights,” “Someone Else Is to Blame,” and “I’m A Victim.”

Not many attended her funeral because so few realized she was gone.

I have received my Polio/smallpox/rubella shot, my pneumonia shot, my tetanus shot, my shingles shot, and my two COVID-19 shots. This was done to protect me from others. I still am cautious about inadvertently being a carrier, so I continue hand hygiene and social practices. Why? Because my memory of “Common Sense” tells me to!

After the loss of “Common Sense,” I am hoping to find a new infant called, “Reality Check!”

He is not very active yet, but I hope he will mysteriously enable us all to receive humongous pieces of information and challenge everyone to sift through the rough to find the truth.

Hopefully, he will find a lady called “Honesty” and they will give rebirth to a loving child called “COMMON SENSE.”

We all need to do an obligatory regular “Reality Check” on everything that is thrown our way.

I reflect upon it daily as it rules my life.

If it is to be, it is up to me.

‘Till next time!
