Kincardine, Huron-Bruce U-13 teams are regional Silver Stick champions
The Kincardine U-13 Kinucks and the Huron-Bruce U-13 Blizzard won the championship trophies at the Kincardine Regional Silver Stick tournament, held on the weekend.
The U-15 and U-13 Kinucks and the U-15 and U-13 Blizzard teams all made it to the finals, after defeating opponents in games Friday and Saturday at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, the Tiverton Sports Centre, and the Ripley-Huron Community Centre. The championship games were held Sunday afternoon at the Davidson Centre.
In the “B” division, the U-13 Kinucks had two wins and one loss in the tournament, and faced the Saugeen Shores Storm in the final, winning, 2-1. Ironically, the Storm was the only team the Kinucks had defeated earlier in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the U-15 Kinucks notched two wins and a tie. They faced the Saugeen Shores Storm in the semi-final, and won by a close 2-1 score; and then took on the BCH (Bayfield-Clinton-Hensall) Ice Dogs, but lost by another close score, 1-0.
In the “C” division, the U-13 Blizzard had two wins, defeated the Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs in the semi-final, 3-1; and then edged the Wingham Ironmen, 6-5, in overtime, to take the championship.
The U-15 Blizzard went undefeated, with three wins. The team then continued its winning ways, shutting out the West Grey Warriors, 3-0, in the semi-final, but lost the final to the Essa Eagles, 1-0, in a tough battle.
This regional championship is the end of the line for this year’s winners as the International Silver Stick competitions, usually held in January, were cancelled due to COVID-19.
