Community Matters: Doing our part for our communities

At Bruce Power, we take our three core values very seriously – Safety First, Performance Excellence, and Social Responsibility.

Our safety record remains strong and our performance has reached industry excellence in many categories as we’ve optimized the reliability of our units, thanks to concerted efforts by our operations, maintenance, work management and many support groups.

This is something we never take for granted – excellence is a journey, not a destination, and there are always ways we can challenge ourselves to do better,

We hold our value of social responsibility in the utmost regard because it provides us with the opportunity to support the people in our communities in a real and tangible way and that’s what people in communities do – support each other.

It's also why we’re proud to pursue one of the most exciting by-products of nuclear generation – life-saving medical isotopes – providing the world market with a tool to fight cancer and sterilize medical equipment. I’m proud of the more than 1,000 people who have contributed to our current isotope project throughout Ontario and the around the world.

For decades, we have produced Cobalt-60 and are currently commissioning our innovative Isotope Production System (IPS) with our partner, Isogen (a joint venture between Framatome and Kinectrics). Once commissioned, the first-of-a-kind system in a large-scale nuclear reactor will produce Lutetium-177, a medical isotope designed to precisely target malignant cells. We look forward to moving into production later in 2022, following commissioning and approvals.

Health care and strong communities close to home are also a key focus of Bruce Power. In recent weeks, we announced support of projects that will benefit our employees, contractors and the hard-working people in our communities.

With the help of our supplier partners, we are kick-starting the Kincardine Hospital Redevelopment Capital Campaign by committing $2-million to the project. Combined with Bruce Power’s previously-committed $1-million for the hospital’s CT scanner, this forms one of the largest donations in the history of the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation.

The Kincardine hospital very much needs an upgrade to both its facilities and equipment, and we’re proud to be able to help the community and our talented health-care professionals. This is on top of the $3-million we committed to various health-care initiatives across the region from 2019-23.

We recently announced a $250,000 donation to the Lamont Sports Park in Saugeen Shores, helping promote a healthy lifestyle and recreational opportunities, with the construction of new baseball diamonds; and we donated $20,000 to the Red Cross for its relief efforts in Ukraine.

Bruce Power is honoured to help support many wonderful causes that help people in our communities, our province and around the world. It’s what being part of a community is all about.
