Executive director Yolanda Ritsema says there is an increased need for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentoring programs as the region enters the recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, the agency has expanded its service area to all of southern Bruce County, including the Walkerton, Teeswater, Formosa, and Mildmay, with the community-based 1:1 and group mentoring programs.
“In the fall of 2021, we received funding from the Perth Huron United Way to support 11 new matches in the service area of northern Huron County,” says Ritsema. “As such, we've launched our In-School Mentoring program at Maitland River Elementary School and Brookside Public School.
“Along with these 11 supported matches, we've identified an additional 25 young people in this area who would benefit from our program. The funds received from our Golf Fore Kids' Sake: Weekend of Golf will directly support the 51 young people in our programs in Bruce County and the additional 36 in northern Huron County.
“We know that young people who had regular contact with their mentors during the pandemic, felt more supported, less anxious, worried or isolated. Your commitment to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kincardine and District, through this event, will ensure that we continue to support young people across southern Bruce and northern Huron counties with mentoring programs that challenge growth, expand possibilities, express care, share power and provide support.”
