South Bruce OPP report traffic charges; theft; and scam alert

UNLICENSED DRIVER CHARGED

(BRANT TWP, ON) – Sept. 13, at 8:16 p.m., a South Bruce OPP officer on patrol along Bruce County Road 4 in Brant Township, stopped a grey Oldsmobile Alero.

The officer found the vehicle had improper validation and the driver was unlicensed. A 35-year-old North Perth woman was charged with drive with no licence and alter validation. She is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 10 to answer to the charges.

POLICE LOOKING FOR STOLEN ATV

(CARRICK TWP, ON) – Sept. 11, at 9:21 p.m., the South Bruce OPP received the report of a theft from a residence along Sideroad 30 North in Carrick Township.

Sometime between 8 p.m. Sept. 7, and 8:30 p.m. Sept. 11, a red Polaris All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) with a black rear rack, was taken. The ATV has no licence plate, but the serial number is on file with police. The value of the stolen ATV is estimated to be $1,500.

SCAM ALERT – E-MAIL ACCOUNT TAKEOVER

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP, in concert with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, is warning residents of Ontario of an active Internet scam in Ontario this month.

The scam generally involves a call to a grandparent who is told that one of the grandchildren is in trouble and the grandparent is asked to send money. While the “grandson” version attracts the media attention, another common trend in the emergency pitch involves E-mails being sent to contact lists from hacked E-mail accounts.

A common version of this scam contains a story that the victim is stranded and in need of money, e.g. travelling abroad, mugged, lost all money and identification and needs money to travel home. The scammer asks for money to be sent by Western Union or MoneyGram to a foreign country.

Protect Yourself

  • Always verify unsolicited contacts before you ever consider responding - unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it
  • Beware of urgent requests for funds from known contacts claiming to be travelling abroad
  • Avoid logging into your accounts from untrusted computers
  • Create strong passwords and security questions and answers
  • If in doubt, contact your local police authority
