Reader calls Soap Box Speech shameful and embarrassing
To the Editor:
RE: “Thurman gives Soap Box Speech about See the Spin: Propaganda 101”
Shame on Lisa Thurman for equating the propaganda machine of Nazi Germany, to the state of affairs in Canada.
If I decided to stand on a soap box on a beautiful summer day, and speak in front of a crowd without fear of imprisonment or worse, I’d have done some due diligence regarding historical accuracy.
The mere fact that we’re free to stand on a soap box and speak freely, negates any plausible comparison to Nazi Germany at all. Do some research and delve into your topic ... shameful and embarrassing.
And in regards to the following ridiculousness, copied directly from her speech:
“Did you hear about the invisible government that is constantly inputting into your brain?” asked Thurman. “It infiltrates your developing thoughts, influences your tastes and beliefs, draws your attention from one thing to the next, and sways your opinion and emotions?”
No, I’ve never heard of the “invisible government,” I suppose because I have a functioning brain, and I choose to use it.
The funniest thing about the speech - and there are lots of pretty funny examples - is that Lisa, herself, is espousing propaganda, high atop her soap box, Canadian flag sadly flung across her shoulders. She is oblivious to the great irony.
I’ll sign off with perhaps her most ironic quote of all. But I give Lisa some credit. She believes so fervently in what she says, that she, herself, is living in her own little universe, unquestioning and uninformed.
“
It’s easy to create your own little like-minded universe that reinforces everything you’d like to believe is true so you never question or see another perspective.”
