New outdoor volleyball courts at Station Beach, Kincardine, open for public use
The four new outdoor volleyball courts at Station Beach, Kincardine, officially opened for public use, Thursday afternoon.
Constructed by the Kincardine Outdoor Volleyball Association, the courts are also available for people to book for events, through the Municipality of Kincardine.
The volleyball association is hosting its first tournament Saturday, Aug. 20, where the executive is holding its official grand opening. Watch the association’s Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/KOVAStationBeach for registration.
The executive includes Melissa Chauder, Jacob Siekierski, Alexis Gallant, Arthur Turland and Andy Ferguson.
Chauder said six trees were removed to make room for the courts, located northeast of the Rotary Snack Booth. But the association plans to plant three trees for each one removed, with the Rotary Club providing the trees.
The association also wants to have the Kincardine District Senior School construction students build shelters and seating areas to put up beside the courts, and there are plans for landscaping along the perimeter fencing.
“We’re just waiting for the municipality to complete its waterfront master plan before going ahead with those projects,” said Chauder.
Doug Holtby and John Phillips, who have been putting up the volleyball nets at the beach every summer, are thrilled to see the new courts completed.
“It’s exciting to have someone pick up the torch,” said Holtby. “This group is very professional and we hope next summer will bring more tournaments and events, programs and classes.”
There is no charge for the public to use the volleyball courts, when they are not booked by the association or other groups.
