Kincardine Women’s Triathlon changes name, moves to Saugeen Shores

March 2, 2023

The Kincardine Women’s Triathlon has now become the Lakeshore Women’s Triathlon and is slated to run in Saugeen Shores, Aug. 12.

That’s the word from race director Sarah Foster, in a press release issued Thursday.

While the race has been hosted by Kincardine since 2001, organizers were unable to secure road closures for the bike route along Huron Terrace due to the construction on Queen Street this summer, states the release.

While a number of alternative routes were proposed, a mutually-agreeable route could not be found that would suit the requirements for the Municipality of Kincardine and the race.

“We are disappointed to be leaving Kincardine, but excited to start fresh in Saugeen Shores,” said Foster. “We are very thankful to Saugeen Shores that it was willing to ensure the Women’s Triathlon continues on.

“I have no doubt racers will be excited by the new route we have planned, which has a breathtaking view of Lake Huron on both the run and bike route.”

The triathlon will take place at the Port Elgin Main Beach, with the bike ride heading out to North Shore Road and Concession 10, and the run happening on the path along North Shore Road.

Registration for the race will open March 18 at 10 a.m.

The Kincardine Women’s Triathlon was founded by Janet Bannerman who, after attending her first triathlon, thought a similar race would be a good fit in Kincardine. She saw it not just for the potential it had in empowering women who would compete in the race, but also as a way to give back to the Kincardine community.

The race has run every year since 2001 except for 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that time, the race has had more than 7,000 participants, and offered many economic benefits to the community in which the race operates. The Women’s Triathlon has donated more than $100,000 back to local non-profit organizations in Kincardine.

The Lakeshore Women’s Triathlon is proud to be an all inclusive race, welcoming women of all abilities to come and try a tri.
