To the Editor:
RE: “Kincardine hikes bag tags by $1 to keep tax-rate increase under 7%”

As the Kincardine municipal council recently announced, the price of bag tags has risen to $3.50 from $2.50. While some may view this as a burden, we must recognize that this is actually a positive development for our community.

The environmental impact of waste disposal cannot be overstated. By increasing the cost of bag tags, people will be more conscious of their waste generation and, hopefully, reduce it. This will lead to less garbage ending up in landfills and a cleaner environment for all. We all share the responsibility of protecting our planet, and this small increase in bag tag prices is a step toward that goal.

Furthermore, the revenue generated from the sale of bag tags goes toward funding waste management services. The increase in bag tag prices means that more money is being put into these essential services, ensuring that they can continue to operate effectively and efficiently. This will lead to a better overall waste management system, with better equipment and more resources to handle waste.

Some may argue that this increase unfairly targets low-income households. However, the user-pay tax model ensures that those who generate more waste pay more for its disposal. This is a fair system that encourages people to reduce their waste and make more conscious choices about their consumption habits. It also ensures that the burden of waste management does not fall solely on taxpayers and that those who generate more waste contribute more toward the cost of its disposal.

In conclusion, the recent increase in bag tag prices is a positive step toward a cleaner environment and a more sustainable waste management system. It is up to all of us to do our part in protecting our planet, and this increase in bag tag prices is a small but necessary step toward that goal.

Let's embrace this change and work toward a better future for our community and the planet we all share.
