Former Bruce Township councillor dies at the age of 89

Walter Edward Ravell, formerly of RR, 2 Tiverton, died at the Southampton Care Centre, Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015. He was 89.

Born on his family farm in Forest in 1926, he met Doreen Boyne at a dance in Saskatchewan. Their romance was delayed as his father, a veteran, himself, encouraged Ravell to join the armoured corps. While in training at Camp Borden, he was injured, punctured in the elbow and chest. His military career was cut short, and he was unable to venture overseas.

After the war, he married Doreen and they had seven children. He became a painter by trade and also worked for Bruce Power. The family purchased two beef farms on the 2nd of Bruce and the 4th of Bruce in 1971.

Ravell became involved in his new community and was a councillor for Bruce Township for more than 10 years, and served on the Bruce Municipal Telephone System (BMTS) board.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doreen.

Survived by his children, Wayne and his wife, Patricia of Kincardine; Phyllis and her husband, Laverne Ferguson of Mount Forest; Diana McLeish of Forest; Daniel and his wife, Eileen of St. John, Newfoundland; Louise and her husband, Ralph Milner of Allenford; Beverley and her husband, Dave Garringer of Wiarton; and Sherry Howe of Ucluelet, British Columbia; as well as 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by his granddaughter, Theresa Ravell; his sister, Amy (Lyle) Prouse; and his son-in-law, Gary McLeish.

Also survived by his sister-in-law, Lola and her husband, Murray Wilcox of Forest.

The funeral was held at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine, Saturday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Don Harry officiating.

Interment, Port Bruce Cemetery.
