Seniors Matter(s): Choices!
- Ability is what you’re capable of doing
- Motivation determines what you do
- Attitude determines how well you do it
- Argue for your limitations and sure enough they are yours
You always have more choices than you think you do!
The 80 Per Cent Factor!
- 80 per cent is good enough the first time!
- 80 per cent is good enough in 80 per cent of situations!
- Recognizing the 80 per cent of a project each person should handle!
- Get to the first 80 per cent as soon as possible!
- 80 per cent produces better results than striving for 100 per cent (community versus isolation)!
- Delegate the second 80 per cent as much as possible!
- Surrender to the fact that things have changed!
Remember, the greatest impact you can have is on yourself.
Let go of your notion of fairness.
It is and you are!
Be mindful of the baggage strapped to your back.
Be the change you want to see in people.
Break out of your reactive modes.
You don’t have to get it perfect; you just have to get it going.
From Mark Hanson, "Chicken Soup for the Soul:"
I'll be happy when ...
We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then, we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.
We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice vacation or when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges.
It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with ... and remember, that time waits for no one.
So, stop waiting ...
Your life is not a coincidence; it’s a reflection of you!
‘Till next time!
Written ByBill Pike is a retired elementary school principal. He and his wife, Sharon, have lived in Kincardine for 47 years, enjoying fulfilling careers, rural life, three wonderful children, and four outstanding grandchildren. Golf in the summer (poorly), pickleball, guitar-playing, long leisurely walks, the sunny south and family all fill his time. This project is as an effort by him to share his interest about the topics affecting seniors and how they can advocate for their issues. The statement, “Getting old isn’t for the faint of heart,” is real! The rewards of retirement can sometimes be accompanied by aches, pains, medical concerns, and general wellness issues. In this column, Pike takes a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of senior living. Don’t laugh at age, pray to make it!
