Kincardine Bulldogs notch four wins in past two weeks
After losing to Mount Forest, 5-2, in the season opener, the Kincardine Bulldogs have hit their stride, notching four wins in the past two weeks, on home ice, in the Pollock Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League.
Friday, Oct. 6, the Bulldogs dominated the Goderich Flyers, taking a 7-1 win.
Goal-scorers were Gavin Downs, Cooper Love, Blake Hellyer, Jordan Moulton, Jordan Beisel, Carter Servais and Kieran Moore; with assists to Moulton, Servais, Nolan Janes, Liam Colhoun, Chad Lawrence, Downs, Beisel and Wilson Shipp.
Kincardine goalie Carter Garvie made 20 saves on 21 shots.
Since it was Thanksgiving weekend, the ‘Dogs also hosted a Turkey Toss, with several players’ moms firing a turkey down the ice toward the goal, with assistance from their sons. The top four tosses won turkeys.
Saturday, Oct. 7, the ‘Dogs hosted the Wingham Ironmen and shut them out, 3-0.
Scoring for Kincardine, were Beisel, Nolan MacKinnon and Downs; with assists to Moore, Moulton and Kyle Dolmage.
Garvie earned the shut-out, making 33 saves.
The Mitchell Hawks came to the Davidson Centre, Friday, Oct. 13, and it wasn’t their lucky day, as the Bulldogs edged them 4-3, to take the win.
Mitchell opened the scoring early in the first period, but midway in the period, Lawrence tied it up for the 'Dogs, from Colhoun and Servais. Mitchell then scored to make it a 2-1 game going into period two.
Partway through the second frame, Hellyer of the Bulldogs scored from MacKinnon and Janes to tie the game at 2-2, but Mitchell scored in the dying seconds of the period, to take the lead again.
Less than 30 seconds into the final period, MacKinnon of the 'Dogs scored from Moulton and Dolmage, to tie the game again, at 3-3. Midway through the period, Servais put Kincardine ahead for the first time in the game, on a powerplay marker, assisted by Trent Houghton.
The clock ran out for the Hawks, and the Bulldogs won, 4-3.
Garvie made 40 saves on 43 shots for Kincardine.
Saturday afternoon, Oct. 14, the Fergus Whalers came to town, only to leave on the short end of this chippy, hard-played match, as the ‘Dogs won, 4-1.
Kincardine opened the scoring midway through the first period when Servais scored from Moulton and Colhoun.
Fergus tied it up in the second period, before the Bulldogs stormed back with two quick goals, to make it a 3-1 game. Downs scored from Servais and Colhoun; and Lawrence scored from Servais and Dolmage.
Late in the third, MacKinnon added another for the ‘Dogs, unassisted, to give them the 4-1 win.
Kincardine goalie Rowen Cherrett made 30 saves on 31 shots.
The Bulldogs are on the road next weekend, playing in Walkerton, Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m.; and in Fergus, Sunday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m.
Their next home game is Friday, Oct. 27, against Mount Forest, at 8:30 p.m., at the Davidson Centre. Then, they are off to Goderich, Saturday, Oct. 28, to face the Flyers, at 8 p.m.
