Herb and Marie Wilkins, formerly of Ashfield Township, celebrate 70th wedding anniversary
If you ask Herb and Marie Wilkins what it takes to stay happily married, they’ll tell you to be satisfied with what you have, remember to plan and dream together, and always be kind.
That’s solid advice from the Chesley couple, formerly of Ashfield Township, who just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Herb Wilkins and Marie Smyth (left) were married Oct. 17, 1953, at the United Church in Dungannon.
They have four loving children, three of whom live close by, while the youngest son lives in British Columbia. They have also been blessed with many beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Side-by-side, Herb and Marie began their married life working a farm in Ashfield Township, and later as custodians at Brookside Public School, south of Lucknow.
They not only lived together but they worked and played together as well, and have made many friends along the way.
Over the years, they have been devoted volunteers in the communities in which they lived, with the agricultural society, the horticultural society, churches, and at various fund-raising events. They also enjoyed camping, boating, road trips, travelling, snowmobiling, and other outdoor activities.
After they retired, they made their home an inviting destination for neighbours and children, including a pond, rabbits and chickens. They also shared in activities designed to bring their neighbours together in fun and friendship.
They are both creative people and have a love of arts and crafts. For many years, they were vendors at various craft shows.
So, what’s it like being married for 70 years - to the same person?
“Sometimes it was like an emotional roller-coaster,” they say, “but when all is said and done, there have been more happy times than sad times, and we enjoy each other’s company.”
Together, they have created a home that is overflowing with love, cherished memories with family and friends, and a devoted life as husband and wife.
Herb and Marie celebrated their special occasion with their family, Oct. 21.
