Paddy Walker Heritage Society launches “Raise the Roof” campaign
November 5, 2023
To the Editor:
The Paddy Walker Heritage Society is grateful for the generous donations received, as it continues to maintain the historic Walker House building and be caretakers of local artifacts and treasures.
In 2020, the society took on an enormous task to restore the exterior of the building. It had weathered lashing storms from the west and termites from the ground. An appeal for help went out and the group was overwhelmed by the generosity of local citizens who helped raise more than $110,000.
BIRD Construction took on the job of co-ordinating this challenging project which would not have happened without its expert help, and the many hours its professionals volunteered.
The society applied for an Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) – Rural Economic Development grant to help cover costs. There was a photo taken i which the government pledged $27,676.83 to the project. Unfortunately, there were limitations attached to the money.
In the end the society received $13,201.81 from the grant. If it had not been for the generosity of BIRD Construction and the many volunteers and supporters, the project would never have been finished.
Once again, the society is asking for your help as the cedar shingles are slowly leaving the roof. In the words of Gordon Lightfoot, “The witch of November comes stealing,” In this case, the shingles!
The Paddy Walker Heritage Society does not receive funding from any other sources, only the events the board of directors and all the wonderful volunteers produce.
If you would like to support this cause, you can donate in two ways. Mail a cheque to the Paddy Walker Heritage Society, 235 Harbour Street, Kincardine, N2Z 2X9 or e-transfer to pwalkertreasurer@bmts.com (include “Raise the Roof” campaign and your mailing address in the comment section). Tax receipts will be issued for your donations.
