Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, Legion Colour Party officially open Silver Stick tournament
The 36th annual Kincardine Regional Silver Stick hockey tournament began Wednesday, with games played all day at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, the Tiverton Sports Centre and the Ripley-Huron Community Centre.

The official opening ceremonies were held Wednesday evening at the Davidson Centre, just prior to the game between the Kincardine Under-15 (U15) Kinucks and the Saugeen Shores Storm, in the “B” division.

The dignitaries were piped in by members of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, along with the Kincardine Legion Colour Party. The Kincardine Legion sponsors the U13B team.

MC Ray Luinstra welcomed everyone to the Silver Stick event, and thanked the sponsors, the coaches, the teams and their families, the officials, and the volunteers, for their help in making the tournament a success.

He also paid tribute to Harold Maurer, a long-time supporter of minor hockey in Kincardine, as well as minor ball and soccer.

Nine-year-old Ruby Wreford of Kincardine sang “O Canada,” and Maurer’s nephews, Paul and Dan Wilken, did the ceremonial puck-drop.

The U15 Kinucks did well against Saugeen Shores, taking a 3-1 win.

Tournament director Derrick Burrows said almost 40 teams are participating in the Silver Stick event, including eight U13B, five U15B, 14 U13C, and 12 U15C. Kincardine has teams in the two “B” divisions, as well as an additional team in the U13 “C” to even out the number of teams.

The Huron-Bruce Blizzard (Ripley and Lucknow players) has teams in the two “C” divisions.

Games continued Thursday and Friday, with the championships set for Saturday afternoon at the Davidson Centre.
