​Major snowstorm causes closed roads, cancellations in Kincardine area

A major snowstorm on the weekend caused the closure of several highways and roads, and the cancellation of numerous events and programs in the Kincardine area.

The storm blew in Friday night, causing several offices and businesses to close early, and the cancellation of the Kincardine Bulldogs hockey game against Fergus.

High wind and heavy snowfall continued through Saturday and by 8 p.m., the South Bruce OPP had closed Highway 21, from Kincardine to Amberley, due to blowing and drifting snow and poor driving conditions.

Lake Range Drive, from Lurgan Lane to Concession 2, in Huron-Kinloss Township, was also closed due to downed trees and power lines.

By 9 p.m., Highway 21 was closed, from Kincardine to Port Elgin, as well.

The Ripley Wolves game against the Georgian Bay Applekings, slated for Saturday night, was cancelled and re-scheduled for Friday, Feb. 2, at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday morning, Bruce County Road 23 (B-line) was closed from Lorne Beach Road to Bruce County Road 20, due to the blowing snow and nil visibility. Highway 21, from Port Elgin to Amberley, remained closed, as did Lake Range Drive, from Lurgan Lane to Concession 2.

And by 1:15 p.m., Sunday, Highway 9 was closed, from Kincardine to Walkerton, due to the blowing and drifting snow.

The Tiverton Sports Centre was closed Saturday and remained closed Sunday.

The Davidson Centre pool in Kincardine was closed Sunday, with the arena, health club and gym open for those who could make it there safely. Evening volleyball was cancelled.

The storm is expected to continue through Monday, with colder temperatures and more snow on the way the rest of the week.

As of 10 p.m., Sunday, all roads remained closed except Lake Range Drive which was re-opened Sunday afternoon.

The South Bruce OPP reminds those who decide to travel, to keep the vehicle’s headlights and tail-lights on and clear of snow and do not drive on a closed road. Remember to keep your speed down; “if you see snow, go slow.”
