​South Bruce OPP kept busy during powerful winter storm on the weekend

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - A powerful winter storm blasted through southern Bruce County on the weekend which made for a busy set of shifts for members of the South Bruce OPP.

Between 7:08 p.m. Jan. 12, and 7:56 a.m. Jan.14, officers responded to 10 motor vehicle collisions. There were non-life-threatening injuries reported at one of these scenes. 

At another collision scene, a vehicle struck a road-closed barricade which highlights how bad the visibility was at times during the storm.

In addition to the collisions, South Bruce OPP officers responded to reports of trees and tree limbs on the road, hydro lines down, vehicles in the ditch, vehicles abandoned on, or near, the highway, along with numerous other calls for service.

Over the weekend, nine motorists were charged for Drive on a Closed Road. This carries a roadside fine of $110 and three demerit points, but the consequences can be much worse if you become stranded in a white-out.

Jan. 15, efforts to re-open Highway 21, between Kincardine and Port Elgin, were under way when officers stopped, and charged, three more motorists for Drive on a Closed Road.

By Monday evening, Jan. 15, all the roads were open. The section of Highway 21, between Kincardine and Port Elgin, was closed for three days and was the final one to re-open.

Also on Monday, for the first time in awhile, all the schools in Kincardine and the school in Ripley were closed; the buses had already been cancelled.
