Kincardine council, staff attend CNA conference, CANHC annual meeting
Members of Kincardine council and staff attended the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) conference, held Feb. 28 to March 1 in Ottawa. The event serves as a platform for communities and members of the nuclear energy sector to discuss advancements, challenges, and prospects.

The theme for the three-day event was “Foundations for Success” with key topics focusing on technological innovations, regulatory frameworks, and the role of nuclear energy in addressing climate change. Key messages focused on enhancing relationships with the nuclear supply chain and promotion of the community as a leading area in the clean energy sector.

“Nurturing existing relationships, while fostering new connections, is a terrific opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what future needs and challenges will be, and how the Municipality of Kincardine can be a strategic part of the solution,” said Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig.

While at the conference, the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities (CANHC) also held its annual general meeting. An in-depth discussion between CANHC members focused on charting a path forward that supports the advancement of Canada’s nuclear technologies while also understanding issues facing local communities.

A highlight of the event was the announcement of $50-million in funding by Jonathan Wilkinson, federal minister of energy and natural resources, to support Bruce Power’s pre-development work studying the feasibility of a new nuclear build on the site which is located in the Municipality of Kincardine. This investment will have a far-reaching impact on the nuclear energy landscape across Canada and particularly in the local region.

“We’re proud that Bruce Power calls the Municipality of Kincardine home,” said Craig. “The announcement of this funding will be instrumental in helping Bruce Power continue to lead the way when it comes to clean energy and innovation. We are better together, and the municipality is committed to strategically supporting Bruce Power and its supplier organizations for the long-term.”
