Kincardine Lions mark 50th anniversary with flag-raising at Lions Park

Despite the cold, windy, rainy weather, Friday afternoon, a solid contingent of Kincardine Lions and supporters gathered at Lions Park beside the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, to raise the Lions flag and the Canadian flag, as they celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Joining them in raising the flags, were Kincardine councillors Rory Cavanagh and Bill Stewart.

At the Kincardine council meeting Wednesday night (April 10), Lion Dennis Flavell spoke to council about the club’s history and the celebration of 50 years of service to the community.

The Kincardine and District Lions Club was chartered April 12, 1974, sponsored by the Tiverton and District Lions Club. Two former mayors, John Askin and Charles Mann, were members of the club.

“Our Lions Club is extremely proud of the projects we have completed and of the support we have provided to our community over the past 50 years,” said Flavell.

Among the major projects, are:
 

• The band shell at Victoria Park
• The stairs at the Kincardine Lighthouse
• The crossing guard shelters at several schools
• The north boardwalk
• The club’s pride and joy - Lions Park, consisting of the playground, picnic shelters and tables, trees, the splash pad, and soon, the all-wheel park

The club has made major donations over the past 50 years to local projects, such as the Kincardine hospital, the medical clinic, the library expansion, and the Davidson Centre; and to local charities, such as Huron Shores Hospice, and Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey.

“We support our schools, sports groups and other organizations in town, such as the food bank, in numerous ways, including grub tubs, sports uniforms, barbecues for events, and an annual donation to the Kincardine Summer Playground inclusion program,” said Flavell.

“We thank the municipality for the support it has provided in the past and we look forward to maintain and expanding on this great partnership in the future.”

“Thank you to the Lions Club,” said mayor Kenneth Craig. “You have gifted the Municipality of Kincardine with many visible and invisible benefits. We have a great partnership and the municipality is proud to be part of that.”

Besides the flag-raising Friday afternoon, the Lions are holding a celebration dinner at Ainsdale Golf Course, June 15.
