​KDSS production of “Newsies” takes to the stage at Kincardine Arts Centre

About 25 students at Kincardine District Senior School (KDSS) are in final rehearsals for the production of Disney's "Newsies, the Broadway Musical,” on stage at the Kincardine Arts Centre this weekend.

The cast and crew (students in Grades 7-12) have been working on this show since the fall, rehearsing for about two hours per week after school, and working backstage and behind the scenes.

Joining director Christine Mensher on the production are musical director Michelle Mayer, production manager Julie Fetter and choreographer Val Shepherd.

“Newsies” is based on the 1992 musical film of the same name which, in turn, was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City.

Lead actors in the show are Emily Cassidy as reporter Katherine and William Luhowy as Jack, the leader of the newsboys, along with Carter Frook, Averee Hamann, Thomas Ostrowski, Kayley Hegmans and Kendra Newton.

The show runs Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m. at the Kincardine Arts Centre.
