Huron United Football Club shuts out Rohingya after bye week
The Huron United Football Club managed to maintain its positive momentum over the bye week, besting the Rohingya Football Club B by a score of 2-0, July 2.

Winger Drew Cobean got Huron United off to a dream start in the eighth minute. After intercepting an errant Rohingya pass, Cobean made the heads-up play to chip the keeper from 30 yards out, giving his team the early lead.

Minutes later, Cobean showed his defensive bonafides with a lunging block and clearance to quell a Rohingya attack. Huron United’s centre-back trio of Murray Martin, James Tigert, and Masoom Saromie, kept Rohingya’s striker in check throughout the first half with well-timed challenges and physicality.

As always, the opposition attackers often found themselves suddenly disinterested in a collision when confronted with the prospect of a loose ball challenge against Huron United’s hulking keeper, Dylan Simon. On the rare occasions Huron United’s defence permitted a Rohingya shot, Simon lunged to deflect the ball to safety.

In the 24th minute, striker Jason Leiskau made an immediate contribution after subbing on, swinging a ball across the field to winger Luke Kim. Kim agilely stepped around the Rohingya keeper before laying off to a streaking Riley Cherrett, who knocked it into the yawning goal.

Angus Sharpe’s attacking prowess from left-back was on display throughout, and on two separate occasions his ball feints sent Rohingya players to the ground near the touch-line, much to the delight of the Huron United bench.

Three minutes into the second half, co-captain Gerrit Satosek created an opportunity out of sheer effort, forcing a turn-over and laying a square ball off to Adam Carty, whose attempt was barely stopped by the Rohingya keeper.

Huron United continued to generate offence even as Rohingya pressed forward. Co-captain Jacob Hunsburger followed a shot block with a long lofted pass to send A. Carty in behind the Rohingya back-line, but his shot trickled just wide of the post.

Lest he be perceived as one-dimensional, Sharpe managed to pull a late Rohingya shot off the goal line to help Simon preserve a well-earned clean sheet.

The Man of the Match electorate arrived at a dead-lock due to the surfeit of stand-out performances. This week's award goes to Simon, Sharpe, and Tigert.

Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season, and the team faced off against Oriental FC, Tuesday, July 9, at Spinrite Field, Listowel.

Huron United’s roster is composed of players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas. The club can be followed at www.kdslsoccer.com/teams/default.asp?u=KDSL&s=soccer&p=home.
