"I am glad to see that the Liberals have finally listened to the concerns of the people of Ontario on this issue and killed their ill-advised plan to allow Ontario municipalities the opportunity to charge an additional land transfer tax," said Thompson.
If implemented, the tax would have given municipalities the power to charge a new land transfer tax, and (based on tax the City of Toronto applies), new homeowners could have been on the hook for an increase of more than $10,000 in land transfer taxes on an average home.
"I would also like to congratulate Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) deputy leader Steve Clark (MPP for Leeds-Grenville) for his ongoing efforts to give home buyers a break," said Thompson. "By introducing a motion to stop the Liberal government from imposing a new municipal land transfer tax, the pressure was on the government to reconsider the financial burden of this new tax.
"I am happy with today's decision, and the public outcry we heard shows that life in Ontario is no longer affordable for many people. We cannot stop here. There is much more to do to make Ontario an affordable, prosperous province once more, and I will continue to fight on behalf of Huron-Bruce".
