Society of United Professionals opens regional office and training centre in Tiverton
The Society of United Professionals has opened a regional office and training centre on one of the busiest intersections in Tiverton.

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting for the new office was held Wednesday afternoon, just west of the Kwik-Way store.

Eric Tiisler, unit director with the labour union, was MC and welcomed a crowd of dignitaries, employees, and media to the event.

Dave Trumble of the Grey-Bruce Labour Council gave the land acknowledgement.

Michelle Johnston, president of the Society of United Professionals, said she was thrilled to open the regional office and training centre. The labour union represents 10,000 engineers, scientists, supervisors and other professionals, including more than 1,300 who work at the Bruce Power nuclear generating station in the Municipality of Kincardine.

“This is an investment in the community,” she said, “demonstrating our strong commitment to the people we represent and to the people who live here.”

She added that the Society has contributed more than $2.5-million in donations to community organizations and projects since 2010. “Through its Community Foundations Fund, the Society’s Bruce Power Local is punching above its weight to build stronger communities where everyone can get the support they need.”

Bruce Power Local vice-president Dave Ceksters pointed out that the Society's first office was located across the road in Tiverton and then in the old antique store before moving to the new building. “Our doors are open to the community, to labour leaders and to charitable organizations.”

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson said the new office is a dream come true. “You have created a hub that matters.”

Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig thanked the Society for choosing the municipality to host this regional hub.

“Through your contributions to the community, you inspire somebody to become a professional, or a business owner, or a parent,” he said. “Your contributions have a bottom-line effect on individuals.”

The renovated building contains six offices on the east side, as well as a boardroom, and the training area on the west side.
