Kincardine Terry Fox Run raises more than $15,000 for cancer research

Sunday morning brought sunny, warm weather for the annual Kincardine Terry Fox Run at the Davidson Centre. About 50 participants raised $15,288 for cancer research.

Margaret Visser of the organizing committee, welcomed everyone and thanked all those participating, as well as the volunteers, who help make the event such a success.

She noted that more volunteers are needed to help with the annual run, and she asked all participants to run on the sidewalk, not the road. Members of the Kinetic Knights Robotics Team were manning the four water stations along the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre routes.

Mike Brough kept the energy going with his music and MC talents, and thanked the many sponsors of the run.

Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig thanked everyone for taking part in the event.

“Everyone here has a story,” he said. “Yesterday, I saw a friend/acquaintance that I hadn’t seen in a couple of years. She used to have a shock of flaming red hair. Now, her hairstyle was a little less dramatic.

“I asked her how she was, and she said she felt much better now that she had her hair back; after a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, she felt like a person again. And she was so glad for the team that supported her.

“Thank you for every step you take in the Terry Fox Run, and every donation in support of my friend.”

Following the singing of “O Canada,” Anthony Wilkinson of No Drama Fitness conducted a warm-up.

Members of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band led the participants in a lap around the outdoor track and then the group headed off to walk, run or roll in either the five-kilometre course or the 10-kilometre course.

Among the participants, was Glen Norcliffe of Kincardine who remembers being part of the very first Terry Fox Run in 1981, in Nanisivik, Baffin Island, now Nunavut. Along the route, is the Terry Fox Pass where a cairn was placed along with the Canadian flag and the Northwest Territories flag.
