Celebration of Diwali to include fund-raising dinner for Kincardine hospital
The local celebration of Diwali will include a fund-raising dinner for about 110 community members, Monday, Nov. 18, at the Kincardine Pavilion.

This past weekend, over a million Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, and other communities across Canada celebrated Diwali, the Sanatan Festival of Lights, observed worldwide over five days (Oct. 30 – Nov. 3).

Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. It honours Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after the defeat of Ravana, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness, peace, and inner harmony. It’s a time for self-reflection, renewal, and honouring the light within.

Just as Christmas, Hanukkah, and other festivals of light bring communities together, Diwali unites people in celebrating resilience, miracles, and the enduring power of light. Local celebrations included school visits to share the festival’s meaning with students, connecting with family in India, and observing Govardhan Puja and Bhaiya Dooj.

Saturday, Nov. 9, a community celebration, organized by the Swajan Samanvay Sanatan Centre, will be held at the Underwood Community Centre, featuring prayers, cultural performances, and a festive meal.

Extending the spirit of Diwali, families from the Swajan Samanvay Sanatan Centre will also prepare and share traditional meals with approximately 120 international students at Georgian College, Thursday, Nov. 14, and with around 110 community members, Monday, Nov. 18, at the Kincardine Pavilion, with proceeds supporting the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation.

This collective effort embodies Diwali’s spirit of sharing, unity, and compassion, spreading its message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — as we observe Hindu Heritage Month in Canada.

May Diwali illuminate our hearts and guide us in truth, acceptance, and selfless action for love and peace. Wishing everyone a joyful, enlightening, and meaningful Diwali!

Take this opportunity to greet your neighbour with “Shubh Diwali!”
