Again, we've been blessed with some beautiful weather to get more crops off, do more fall work and to go places with friends and family!

Wedding anniversary wishes go to Stosh and Elizabeth Cubberley, Stefani and Mike Simpson, and Dennis and Donna Bridge!

We extend birthday greetings to Pat Chatham, Clara Farrell, Linda Campbell, Deanna Scott and Mary Anne Kukoly. Marie Colling celebrated her 90th birthday last week with family and friends, and Doug MacDonald is going to be 80 years young! We hope all of you had a great day and best wishes for this next year!

Several people have attended the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair over the past 10 days and what a show it was! Every day, there were locals either participating or going to support the exhibitors! Our Bruce County 4-H beef, dairy, sheep and goat club members were on the various days, and other beef, dairy and horse producers were out in record numbers. Our Ripley-Huron Community School Grades 7 and 8 students attended Friday for the Holstein Show and, of course, many other shows and exhibits. Congratulations to all exhibitors - it's a great effort to be participating and in the show ring!

We extend our sympathy to the families of Claire Thuell of Ripley, Karen Passmore of Kincardine, Debbie McGillivray of Point Clark and Clarence Ritchie of Lucknow, and others who are grieving at this time.

Several people have visited the Remembrance Day Exhibits at the Walker House in Kincardine and were pleased to attend the Saturday speaker events with Glenys Johnson and Kevin Larson. It was very interesting to learn of the Lampman family and the Malcolm Furniture Factory and the war contributions, as well as the influence both these families had on the businesses in Kincardine.

Remembrance Day Sunday was celebrated at church services in our communities to recognize the many people who fought in the First and Second World Wars, for the freedoms and privileges we enjoy today.

From Nov. 3 to Dec. 2, the Leonid Meteor Shower is to start around midnight until dawn. The best nights to watch for meteors are Nov. 17 and 18. We're supposed to be able to see up to 10 meteors per hour!

PURPLE GROVE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Nov. 6, the Purple Grove W.I. met at the home of Dianne Simpson at 7 p.m.

Convener Marilyn Reid introduced Dr. Jason Murray as our guest speaker. He gave us an excellent review of pain medications and their role in how we can manage chronic and acute pain.

He answered questions and encouraged us to maintain a healthy diet and remain active with exercise, physiotherapy and other disciplines, to keep from needing prescription pain medications. Our pharmacists are also excellent resources to help us when needing information about medications and how they can interact with our systems. Cheryl Bridge thanked him for an excellent presentation.

In the business discussion, the Bruce County W.I. Rally report was given by Fran Farrell with seven of our branch attending. Bruce County District president Bren de Leeuw welcomed everyone to the Port Elgin Legion for the day. Thirty-two W.I. members were in attendance. There were no Women of Excellence Award nominations this year.

Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) president Michelle Phillippi and area voting delegate Alyssa Phillippi reported on the Area Conventions they have attended in September, putting more than 12,000 kilometres on the W.I. car. Michelle again expressed her appreciation for all the FWIO members and new friends she has made during her time as president.

Proceeds from the Silent Auction went to district funds. Guest speaker was Heather Finnie who talked about community involvement. She was a lively speaker, switching her "hats" to represent the various committees and programs she supports and volunteers with. Her presentation was well-received.

Information was received on the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada Triennial Conference and the resolutions that were accepted. Many of them are focused on standardizing health-care options and certifications.

President Bren de Leeuw extended our appreciation to Dianne Simpson and Robyn Bridge as hostesses, Dianne and Mary Anne Kukoly on lunch, Bonnie Boyle for Scripture and Marilyn Reid as convener. News reporter for November is Fran Farrell.

Our Dec. 4 meeting will be held at the home of Marilyn Reid at 1:30 p.m., where we will be creating some Christmas crafts with Christine Roberts.
