Readers question what other mistakes Kincardine council has made, beyond the Secord affair

RE: “Secord family upset over destruction of monument by Municipality of Kincardine”
After reading the article, “Secord family upset over destruction of monument by Municipality of Kincardine,” I’d say it will take several months for the mayor and most of his council (some call them the Secord Seven) to wipe the egg off their faces.
The story also makes you wonder how many other mistakes these councillors are making on our behalf.

I guess we don’t realize the hurt that worldly ideas can have on the history of our country’s heroes when we don’t study the words available to realize the truth.
We must be sure we know what is at stake when we remove something that maybe shouldn’t be done.

Wow, what can Kincardine council do now?
If there’s another $15,000 available, staff can recommend another “unbiased, completely neutral consultant” which, according to council’s past course of action, will be approved.
Decisions, decisions, decisions. What’s the projected mill rate at?
When I “woke up” this morning …!

To the Editor:
I have read this article in its entirety.
It was very disturbing to read how David Secord and his solicitor were ignored by our mayor, deputy mayor, municipal solicitor and others.
The information that Mr. Secord detailed was very enlightening and should have been part of the research by the consultant that council, under the recommendation of staff, hired.
As a resident of Kincardine, I want to express to the Secord family that I was against the decommissioning of the Secord Monument and was appalled to hear that it had been destroyed. I had hoped it would have been safely stored until the next council was elected in 2026, in hopes that the new council would have it placed back where it belongs and had been for more than 100 years.
My sincere apologies to the Secord family for the disgusting way they have been treated. Mr. Secord said he understood about democracy and the wishes of the residents of Kincardine. This is not what the majority of the residents of Kincardine wanted to happen to Dr. Solomon Second’s monument.
Unfortunately, our council, with the exception of councillor Bill Stewart, did not act in a democratic manner and did not respect the wishes of the residents who wanted the monument to be placed back in its rightful place. Many residents wanted a referendum (vote) to decide the fate of this monument but council, I believe, knew that a referendum would not have the outcome they wanted.
Some members of the council were swayed by the emotional motion by the deputy mayor and supported by the mayor. Only one councillor, Bill Stewart, used common sense and spoke with reason. Unfortunately, he was not heard.
I am sure that the residents of Kincardine who respected Dr. Secord and all he did for Kincardine, are saddened to read this information from Mr. Secord, and feel the same way I do.
I encourage the Secord family not to let this matter go without accountability for those who are responsible for degrading Dr. Secord’s reputation and destroying the monument that was dedicated by the residents at the time, to honour the man they so loved and who cared for so many.
