Roads, schools closed as Kincardine area slammed with blizzard Thursday
The Kincardine area no sooner had some relief from last week’s winter blast, then it was slammed with blizzard conditions, Thursday morning.

Roads were closed, schools were closed, events and programs were cancelled, and some businesses were closed, as the heavy snow and high wind wreaked havoc.

Highway 21, from Amberley to Kincardine, was the first road to close, at 4:10 a.m., as reported by the South Bruce OPP, due to blowing and drifting snow and poor-to-nil visibility.

By 6 a.m., Highway 21 was closed, from Amberley to Port Elgin, and Bruce County Road 23 (B-line) was closed, from Lorne Beach Road to Bruce County Road 15, due to poor road and weather conditions, and multiple disabled vehicles.

A half-hour later, Bruce County Road 23, from the edge of the Town of Kincardine to Bruce County Road 15, was closed, but within a couple of hours, that closure was back to just the north end, from Lorne Beach Road to Bruce County Road 15.

By 8:30 a.m., the South Bruce OPP had closed Highway 9, from Kincardine to Walkerton, due to blowing and drifting snow.

The Municipality of Kincardine closed its municipal administration centre, as well as the Tiverton Sports Centre, the pool at the Davidson Centre, Landfit at the Davidson Centre, and all drop-in programs and lessons at the Davidson Centre. By 10 a.m., the municipality had closed the Davidson Centre.

As of 9 a.m., Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling had pulled its trucks from the roads. The Municipality of Kincardine announced that Kincardine Township recycling will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. Garbage scheduled for today will be picked up tomorrow. The Waste Management Centre in Armow was closed.

By 9:15 a.m., the municipality had pulled its plows from the rural roads due to the poor weather conditions.

Meanwhile, in Huron-Kinloss, the municipal office in Ripley was closed for the safety of staff and the public.

Garbage and recycling pick-up were both cancelled. Lucknow and Area Section 7 garbage will be picked up tomorrow. Lakeshore Section 2 recycling will be picked up on the next scheduled date. Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling website.

Adult and Tots and Senior Skate, and Shinny at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre were cancelled.

The township urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor local weather updates and road conditions if travel is essential: Bruce County Road Conditions, www.brucecounty.on.ca/road-conditions; Weather Alerts for Huron-Kinloss, weather.gc.ca/?alertTableFilterProv=ON&center=43.92330111,-82.04026375&zoom=8.

The after-hours emergency line, regarding municipal issues, is 1-866-299-5199.

The blizzard raged through Thursday and is expected to continue Friday, with heavy snowfall, high wind and cold temperatures. The weekend will warm up with some sun on Saturday and rain on Sunday.

As of Thursday at 9 p.m., 511 Ontario is reporting that only Highway 21, from Amberley to Port Elgin, remains closed.
