Students shine at Ripley-Huron Community School Winter Wonderland concert
It wasn’t a Winter Wonderland outside, but in the gymnasium at Ripley-Huron Community School, the students and teachers were singing about everything from being on the Nice List, and needing New Teeth, to Building a Snowman, Making Toys and Christmas Cookies.

The concert also featured the senior students in the school band, under the direction of Mackenzie Burgess; ukuleles playing Jingle All the Way; drumming to Carol of the Bells; and a number of dance routines for the Grades 7 and 8 Holiday Dance-Off.

The highlight of the show, was the Grades 5 and 6 students doing a rendition of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas at RHCS.

Written by Courtney Nelson and Andrea Larsen’s Grades 5 and 6 class, the lively poem went like this, with all the appropriate actions and costumes:

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the school,
The teachers decided they would break every rule.

They thought it might be fun to play a little trick,
To help remind students how to act for St. Nick.

We students were nestled, we were snug in our beds,
While the teachers had plans for after hours instead.

We were on our devices tracking Santa on the map,
When we drifted to sleep for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the yard there arose such a clatter,
We all sprang from our beds to see what was the matter!

Away to the yard we flew like a flash,
Looked at the school and let out a gasp!

It was hard to see through the new fallen snow,
But it looked like Mrs. Culbert was encouraging the show.

When what to my wandering eye should appear,
Mrs. Church was hitting the gritty and scaring the reindeer.

Then along came a driver so lively and quick,
We crossed our fingers “It must be St. Nick!”

More rapid than Mrs. Andrew running the bases,
It was Mr. Greenwood doing wheelies and spraying our faces!

“Is that Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen?” We all excitedly called?
It’s Ms. Duvall, Mrs. Gallina, Ms. DeJong, and Ms. Yundt all racing down the hall!

We tried to tell them they were breaking every rule,
But they dashed away, dashed away, fleeing from the school!

Next we saw Mrs. Yungblut and behind her Ms. Vaughan,
Stealing the plasma cars and tearing up the lawn.

Then up on the rooftop, we thought we saw St. Nick,
But it was Mrs. Elliott laughing as she cancelled all our trips!

And then in a twinkling, we heard Mr. Quinn,
He was taping his Sherwood, determined to win!

As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Walking up the street, our teachers came with a bound!

Mrs. Andrew and Mrs. Lockie, trendy head to foot,
Must have been in our chimneys, they were covered in soot!

Mrs. Creech had a bundle of toys on her back,
We thought for her classroom, but she sure argued that.

Mrs. Burgess laid a finger alongside her nose,
Then hopped on her ukulele and up our chimney she rose.

With her was Ms. Nelson her smile drawn up like a bow,
But she stole our new platforms and all of our dough!

Ms. Ruttan snuck in next and looked under the tree,
She swiped all our tech for the Assembly Club team!

Mrs. French’s eyes twinkled, her smile so merry,
But emptying the care closet is anything but caring.

We thought Ms. McKenzie might help us out,
But she was decorating cookies and they all had a pout.

“Mrs. Larsen, Ms. Adams, you’re some jolly elves”,
But they high-fived and laughed, “Fend for yourselves!”

With the wink of an eye and a twist of her head,
Ms. Chauder rolled her ankle and used us for crutches instead.

Straight from the office, our parents got a text,
Christmas Break was cancelled and guess what happened next?

Mr. Norman was playing hockey and knocked out his teeth,
To pay for them he stole money from the Huron Ridge Wreaths!

Ms. Dejardins and Mrs. Poster, although innocent they appear,
Tried to kybosh this concert, it’s a miracle we’re here!

We hoped Ms. K would be a well-behaved elf,
But we saw her emptying chocolate from the prize bin on her shelf.

Mrs. Parmley was riding a unicorn and Mrs. Zettler, the Lexia cart,
Ms. Splettstoesser was wrecking the paper mache art!

Mrs. Dittner’s eyes popped as she saw the big mess,
Then she laughed, threw her mop, and joined in with the rest!

The students shook their heads, this couldn’t be real,
Were these really their teachers, what was their deal?

With a blink of an eye, the chaos disappeared,
Could this really have been a dream? Will St. Nick still get here?

We all woke up, nestled back in our beds,
It really was a dream … we scratched our heads.

Back to sleep we fell, Christmas was coming quick,
We know smart choices will deliver Old St. Nick.

Deep in sleep, we heard Mrs. Fraizinger cheer,
Merry Christmas to all, don’t come back ‘till next year!
