​Huron-Kinloss providing service of marriage commissioners for 20 years

This is the 20th year that Huron-Kinloss has offered the service of marriage commissioners.

A report by deputy clerk Kelly Lush was approved at the township’s committee-of-the-whole meeting, Monday morning (Jan. 13).

This was an update on the commissioning service for 2024.

The township has four marriage commissioners available to perform civil marriage ceremonies.

Mike Fair conducted five services last year, while Marilynne Gilchrist performed 14, Crystal Morais had 19, and L. Stewart had 11, for a total of 49 services. That is up from the 48 in 2003, but down from the 56 is 2022. There were 41 services conducted in 2021, and 36 in 2020.

There are 12 ceremonies already booked for 2025.

Gilchrist submitted her resignation as of Dec. 31, 2024. She has been a valued commissioner for close to 10 years, and the township appreciates her hard work and dedication.

To continue to offer the standard of service provided in the past, the recruitment process to fill the vacant position began in October, with a successful candidate announced in late November.

Janice Wilhelm of Huron-Kinloss will join the township team as a marriage commissioner, and begin with the 2025 wedding season.

Lush added that an estimate of the fees generated by the marriage commissioners will be included in the 2025 budget.
