Kincardine couple collecting wacky socks for students, to promote World Down Syndrome Day

Melissa and Shane Watson of Kincardine enjoy giving back to their community, having organized the on-line auction in the past to support the Movember Movement.

Now, they have been inspired to bring awareness to World Down Syndrome Day, by collecting wacky socks to donate to students as a step toward being inclusive and bringing awareness to Down Syndrome.

Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes, or 46 in total. People with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome – 47 in total – and usually have an intellectual disability.

“This is a cause that is close to our hearts and our community as we show love to people of all abilities,” says Melissa.

The annual “Lots of Socks” campaign, held next month in Kincardine, welcomes people to wear fun socks to promote the cause and those with an extra chromosome.

“We hope that the socks will be worn by many on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, but that the conversation with our youth can start even earlier with the help of this resource,” says Melissa.

“Our mission is to ask the residents of Kincardine to purchase pairs of socks that we can donate to our schools in Kincardine to promote World Down Syndrome Day. With the help of many local businesses, we have been able to add an incentive to really give this initiative a boost, by collecting prizes that will be given out by random draw to anyone who participates.”

All socks will be collected by March 14, and the draws will be made on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21.
