Huron OPP report successful food, toy drive; and surge in copper wire thefts

TREMENDOUS SUPPORT FOR HURON OPP AUXILIARY FOOD AND TOY DRIVES

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – The Huron County OPP is pleased to report the recent Christmas food and toy drives were an overwhelming success. The food drive was held Dec. 12 at Scrimgeour’s Food Market located in Blyth.

Huron County OPP auxiliary officers said the food drive was the most successful event in recent history. In total, 60 bags of food, weighing in at more than 600 pounds, plus $170 in cash donations were received from the generous donors. All the donations were donated to the Huron Women’s Shelter.

The Huron County OPP auxiliary toy drive, held at the Goderich Wal-Mart Dec. 13, was also a great success. The generous donors filled a cruiser and a full-size pick-up truck, with toys. The organizers said the amount of toys collected completely surpassed their expectations. The toys were all donated to the Salvation Army branch located in Goderich.  The generous donations of toys and food will, undoubtedly, brighten up the holidays for many local families.

SURGE OF COPPER WIRE THEFTS IN HURON

(HURON COUNTY, ON) -  Huron County OPP officers and members of the Huron County OPP Property Crimes Unit continue to investigate a recent rise in the number of copper wire thefts experienced throughout the county.

Since early October, Huron OPP officers have investigated 21 incidents where suspects have stolen copper wire and/or damaged wind turbines from the Grand Bend Wind Farm located along the Bluewater coast. Additionally, 10 power transmission substations, located throughout Huron County, have been targeted.

In most cases, the thieves have cut off lengths of the exposed copper wire grounding cables. In some cases, the thieves have even forced entry into the base of the turbines to steal the copper wire. The value of the stolen wire is typically less than $1,000 per incident; however, the associated repairs to the facilities and the service interruption costs, are well into the thousands of dollars.

Not only are these criminals breaking the law, they are placing themselves at great risk of personal injury, including electrocution when they commit these crimes.

The Huron OPP continues to investigate these crimes and we need your help. Please stay vigilant around wind turbine and power substation sites and promptly report any suspicious activity, people or vehicles observed on the property.

Anyone with information about these thefts is requested to contact Huron County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
