Dog-sled rides, snow sculptures highlight Tiverton Winterfest celebration
It was cold and snowy, but that didn’t stop a good crowd from enjoying the fun at the annual Tiverton Winterfest celebration on the weekend.
The activities began Friday evening, with a Family Games Night.
Saturday morning, the Tiverton Firefighters hosted a delicious breakfast, followed by road hockey, a euchre tournament, Cornhole, and the Port Elgin Lions Club Mega TV Bingo.
The highlights of the day were the dog-sled rides and the snow sculptures, held at the ball diamonds, east of the Lions Hall. There was a long line-up of families waiting to ride the sleds pulled by teams of huskies.
Meanwhile, the Virtue Family created a snow sculpture of a campfire with seating which took first prize in the contest. Second prize went to Taylor and Taylin Taverner for their Volkswagen car, and third prize went to the Tiverton Park Manor crew with its sculpture of a whale.
The Tiverton Lions welcomed a huge crowd inside the Lions Hall for free hot dogs and hot chocolate, and to warm up from the cold. By the time the dust had settled, they had served 100 hot dogs and more than 100 cups of hot chocolate. The Lions also had free Canadian flags for the children, in honour of the 60th anniversary of Flag Day.
Winterfest continued Sunday morning with the worship service at Knox Presbyterian Church, followed by a free chili luncheon at the church, courtesy of the Hutton family.
Lots of people enjoyed the Family Fun Skating Party, Sunday afternoon, at the Tiverton Sports Centre, with free skating, face-painting by Lisa Leyes, and free hot dogs and hot chocolate.
The festivities ended with a well-attended spaghetti dinner, hosted by the Tiverton Agricultural Society.
