Knox Kincardine donates $1,500 to Kincardine Food Bank
It was warm and cozy at Knox Presbyterian Church in Kincardine, as about 100 people gathered in the activity room, Friday afternoon, for the community soup lunch which was postponed from Valentine’s Day, due to inclement weather.
There were more than a dozen different kinds of soup and loads of sweet, iced Valentine cupcakes, all of which were enjoyed by the crowd of people who were glad to get a break from being stuck at home because of the recent snowstorm.
Knox's next food event will be the Great Canadian Hot Stew and a Bun Lunch, April 4 - hopefully, the weather will be kinder by then.
Also at the soup lunch, Rev. Dan West of Knox Church, presented a cheque for $1,500 to the Kincardine Food Bank.
In 2024, the food bank had 2,341 total visits, says co-ordinator Lorrie Alexander. Of those, 860 were families, 231 were single families, and 747 were singles. There were 93 new clients, 511 seniors, and 1,646 dependants.
Bear in mind that if a person went to the food bank as a single senior each month, that individual would account for 12 single visits and 12 seniors visits, unless the person also came at other times during the month, needing groceries and gift cards. In that case, the individual would account for more visits. There are some clients who use the food bank every week.
A total of 385 people shopped at the “free table,” where they can pick up items not included in their allotment of monthly groceries and gift cards.
Already in January, 2025, the food bank has had 456 visits, compared to 370 at the same time last year.
Knox Church is also donating to the following:
- United Way of Bruce and Grey Backpack Program, $2,500
- Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, $1,500
- Knox Scholarship for a deserving KDSS Grade 12 graduating student, $1,500
- Big Brothers and Big Sisters of South Bruce North Huron, $1,000
