Huron Bruce Nature members celebrate fellowship and new name
Following a string of winter storms and many days of restricted travel, members of the local nature club were more than ready to end their social isolation.

Sixty hardy souls battled the blowing and drifting snow to gather at the Point Clark Community Centre, Saturday, Feb. 22, for the club’s annual potluck and photo contest, and were rewarded with a feast for the eyes and taste buds.

The winners of the photo contest, themed “Life on the Fringes/Edge,” were Christine Roberts and Anne Scanlon with images of butterflies, fungus and trees. Their photos will be featured in the next newsletter.

After the meal and voting, the members gave their attention to presenters Kim Armitage (also a club member) and Andrew Evans, representatives of KEAN – the Kincardine Environmental Action Network. Together, they highlighted the group’s mission, current initiatives and future plans which revolve around environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Of particular interest, is the Tetrapack-recycling program with a drop-off bin available at the Kincardine Library. Armitage reported that nearly 130 kilograms of tetrapacks have been collected and diverted from the landfill in 2025, although she pointed out the program is temporary since changes to recycling in Ontario come into effect in 2026.

KEAN can be contacted by E-mail at: KincardineEAN@gmail.com and information about programs and coming events can be found on the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/1111376524033543.

Theo Saxton, son of one KEAN member, provided packaged and labelled seeds from a wide selection of native wildflowers. They generated a great deal of interest as members chose some to try in their home gardens. Information about the seeds can also be found on the group’s Facebook page.

Since the last regular meeting in November, the club has chosen a new name, Huron Bruce Nature, and is in the process of having a new logo designed as it re-brands and prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

A public open house is planned for Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m., at the Point Clark Community Centre. Past, present and future members are invited to enjoy displays of the club’s history, programs and accomplishments. Refreshments will be served and the new logo unveiled.

The next regular meeting takes place Tuesday, March 25, at 7 p.m. in Point Clark. Representatives of Bruce County Economic Development will be discussing Bruce County Tourism under the banner Explore the Bruce. They'll discuss their target audience, partners and tourism strategies.

Guests and visitors are always welcome but should bring their own mug and napkin for refreshments. Inquiries can be made to Christine Roberts, christineroberts153@gmail.com.
