Nearly six-million trees planted since 1974, through SVCA program
For more than 50 years, the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has been committed to reforestation, eco-system restoration, and sustainable forest management across the watershed.
Since 1974, the SVCA has planted 5.9-million trees in partnership with local landowners, municipalities, and environmental organizations.
Through its dedicated forestry team, the SVCA has restored approximately 8,423 hectares of land, working alongside more than 1,144 landowners, to support a healthier, more resilient landscape. The largest planting season on record was 2010, with 244,720 seedlings planted.
“At Saugeen Conservation, we don’t just plant trees - we grow forests,” says Donna Lacey, manager of forestry and lands. “Our forestry program is designed to provide long-term benefits for landowners and the environment, helping to combat climate change, enhance bio-diversity, and improve soil and water health.”
The SVCA’s tree-planting services include:
- Free site assessments to determine the best species and planting approach for each property
- Custom planting plans tailored to landowners’ objectives
- Full-service tree-planting, using both machine and hand-planting techniques
- Cost-sharing opportunities that reduce expenses for landowners through funding programs
- Post-planting survival assessments to ensure long-term success
As an authorized Planting Delivery Agent for Forests Canada, the SVCA participates in the 50-Million Tree Program, which provides financial assistance for eligible landowners. This program has helped make tree-planting accessible and affordable, with funding covering up to 90 per cent of the costs.
However, the SVCA’s forestry expertise extends far beyond Forests Canada’s programs. The SVCA offers independent planting projects, afforestation initiatives, and sustainable forest management plans to support private landowners, municipalities, and community organizations in achieving their environmental goals.
