Kincardine SMART exercise class wins CN Tower challenge
A local group of seniors has exercised its way to the top of the CN Tower.
Not literally, but through the SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together) exercise program, operated by VON Grey-Bruce at the Anglican Church of the Messiah in Kincardine.
The Kincardine No. 2 group, led by volunteer Millie Zarubick, took on the challenge of doing 22 sit-to-stand exercises at each class, twice per week, over four weeks, walking the distance of the CN Tower (1,776 steps) almost four times over.
The challenge began Nov. 2, and with each class came an interesting fact about the CN Tower, such as that it stands 1,815 feet, five inches tall and held the record as the tallest building, tower, and free-standing structure for more than three decades.
The calculations were done in early December, and the Kincardine group won the trophy which was presented Dec. 11 at the church.
The Kincardine No. 2 SMART exercise class wins the CN Tower Challenge trophy; in the back, are Lois Dwan (L), Betty Lou Dennison, Pat Bellefeuille, Jean Bain, Glenna Angus, Gene Zarubick, Mary Pockett, instructor Millie Zarubick, and Jill Thurston, co-ordinator with VON Grey-Bruce in Owen Sound; and in front, Mary Musselman (L), Willa Schoffer, Annie Carter, Gabriella Kleist, June McGregor and Ruth Ingard
