Kincardine to lower flags to half-mast Monday, marking National Day of Mourning
April 28 is the National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace, a day officially recognized nationwide each year.
Kincardine will mark this sombre occasion by having all flags on municipal flagstaffs throughout the community lowered to half-mast the morning of Monday, April 28, until Tuesday morning, April 29.
This is to honour those who have suffered work-related disability, disease, and death.
April 28 was chosen in 1984 by the Canadian Labour Congress, coinciding at the time, with the 70th anniversary of the day the Ontario Worker’s Compensation Act was approved by the government. It became part of national legislation Feb. 1, 1991.
This day is also known globally as Workers’ Memorial Day, with about 100 countries commemorating the occasion around the world.
Every worker has the right to return home at the end of every work day. Take time Monday to reflect on the safety of your own workplace practices. By working together, we can prevent worker injuries and deaths.
